You can work hard on your grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation, but being able to communicate naturally isn’t easy.
In fact, the toughest part of learning German is knowing how to speak like a native.

SPEAKING GERMAN ALMOST LIKE A NATIVE
During my college days, about 45 years, I had Sociology as my major for which I’d received my BA, and for my minor, I wound up taking German. Back in those days, my oral comprehension had been excellent [I’d received an A], reading comprehension had been a B+, with my writing being somewhat lower. It is the oral capabilities that are the most important that one needs to communicate with others in German. While my oral comprehension of spoken German going from German to English after all of these years is still relatively quite decent after all of these years. However, these days, due to lack of an opportunity to speak German, I’ve got problems trying to formulate what I’d like to say in German. The reason I’m mentioning this is that my dear OH and I plan to travel to Germany got pre-empted due to family matters. Now due to the COVID-19 virus, our plan has once again due foiled. When traveling abroad to any European country, its citizens appreciate it when tourists try to communicate in the country’s language. The best thing about this particular book is its continued use of the phonetic pronunciation of each phrase throughout its pages. The phonetic pronunciation gives the book’s English readers the correct way to speak German in a manner they’ll be able to understand. For wanting to enrich its reader’s ability to speak German as if they’re a native, by providing them with the most useful phrased they might encounter or want to speak, I’ve given the book’s publisher 5 STARS for its endeavor.
‘Schau dir all die Farben an’ – Look at all the colors!
Lucky for us Lingo Mastery continues its mission – to make other languages more accessible to a wider population. In the Introductory Note the goal is stated well: ‘If you have finally decided to visit a German-speaking country, countries rich in history and culture, you may want to consider the words and phrases that might be of use in certain situations. English is the second language people learn at school in these countries, so you should be able to get through well with English, especially I the cities. In the countryside, however, or with older people, you’ll be thankful for possessing at leas basic-level German language skills.’ After their success teaching Spanish, French, Italian, Chinese, Dutch, Russian and now they enhance their previous teaching of German! And it works. Not only are the phrases presented useful, but also the additional experience of correct pronunciation of the German language, umlauts, diphthongs and all, is indispensible to learning proper communication – verbiage and how to use the words correctly. A very impressive guide is provided on how to pronounce vowels and consonants (as well as their combinations) in the German tongue, along with a phonetics pronunciation guide of each and every word in the phrases, included after every translation. Taking it slowly, step by step with practice, German phrases become accessible! The technique is solid and the lessons well taught. This is a very fine introduction to German language that may arise when you visit German-speaking countries, appropriate for all age levels. Take the journey into a new language! Grady Harp, May 20
Great book to learn German!
This is a great book to introduce learners to a new language. The beginning goes through the alphabet and provides the correct pronunciation. Then each phrase is given in English, German, and the phonetic pronunciation of the phrase in German. The phrases go through a large spectrum from easy to more difficult and some of the phrases are really funny like, "You stole my shoes and I would like them back." It was fun to look for these phrases that would actually come in handy in some situations but may not be something you would think of as normal conversation. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone wanting to learn German!!
Words and phrases grouped by topic
The book provides single important key words as well as phrases and questions grouped by topics, from colours and numbers to phrases asking for direction or at the doctor. It covers a wide variety of topics. Each word/phrase is first given in English, below that in German, and below that again an attempt to write a phonic version of the word/phrase, based on the English pronunciation. As long as you are familiar with English phonetic rules, it kind of works - in not - ignore the last line and figure out the pronunciation on your own. Personally I am not keen on this kind of approach to learn a language, but I understand the need, that when you travel or have newly arrived in a country you have no language knowledge of, to have a quick guide at your finger tips.... I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Many helpful and useful phrases!
I love phrasebooks! Typically, I scan through them quickly and find the ones that are relevant to me, my goals, and if I'm traveling. Then to make sure that they stick, I put them into a personal flashcard software like Anki. I've not finished the book yet, but I've read the lion's share. It takes awhile to create hundreds of flashcards! Lingo Mastery is helping to pave the way for easily digestible and graded readers to assist people to acquire a foreign language. Reading is one of my very favorite ways to soak up a language! However, you typically need to know several hundred words over 1,000 before reading can be enjoyable beyond stuff written for children. Lingo Mastery bridges this gap onto more interesting content. Weiter so mit der großen Arbeit!
Every Play Scattergories? Use this book to make a homemade German edition!
The entire phrasebook is broken down into 27 categories. This is your everyday standard language use. It also includes common phrases someone who doesn't know German but finds themselves in Germany may want to use. The only fault is in the kindle edition there are no page numbers. Not entirely necessary but sometimes nice to have as a reference point. My favorite part about this book though is the fact that is makes the pronunciations a little easier by breaking them down per syllable. And of course the book's introduction starts off with explaining what letters and syllables are different from english. Take the time to work through this book and you will feel more comfortable stuttering out "Kann ich eine Speisekarte haben?" when you walk into a restaurant. Take advantage of the audiobook too!
I think the books and audios from Lingo Mastery are great. This book is no exception.
The introduction covers the different pronunciations of vowels and the helpful phonetic interpretation of the symbol they use for their phonetic sounds, which they use throughout the book. There is a beautiful array of English phrases that have the German translation and the phonetic representation. things like, "what times do these shops open in this area," "I would like to set up an appointment with my doctor," "is there a lawyer who speaks English?" There are great examples of the myriad phrases that one needs to interrelate with other German-speaking people.
Practical Phrases
Liked that the phrases were one line statements The questions were making sure that the reader understood the statements. The best benefit of the book is that answers to the questions were provided. The brief statements were categorized to areas of concern (if you were visiting Germany) I would probably follow this author to assist me in learning German.
Another useful tool for German study
As with all the Lingo-Mastery publications, this phrase book is chock full of helpful material. The organization is convenient by topic and the translations natural and intuitive. Students can find patterns throughout that can be applied to figure out new phrases with word substitution, etc. Highly recommended!
Fun companion
I did not expect this to be a road trip favorite but our two kids took to it, having fun with repeating German phrases and playing around with the language. German is like the Lego/Minecraft of languages.
