So beef eating is only an issue for the majority Hindus in India. Muslims & Christians enjoy beef delicacies. Surprisingly in ancient Hindu scriptures (vedas) there are mentions of benefits of beef. It seems that hindus used to eat beef and cow meat was also offered to gods as sacrifice. When Buddhism was spreading in India many villlages after villages were getting converted to Buddhism and Hinduism was most vulnerable that time. People were in love with the concept of non-violence and love for animals. In order to compete with such aggressive marketing of non-violence, hindu leaders had to take some measure and incorporate such practices in their religion as well. So praising Cow was one of the practices included to compete with Buddhism. The historian and writer of the article who wrote above findings on "The Hindu" newspaper was punished badly by Hindu fanatics, they burned his house after the article was published.
